MORNING WORKSHOP: Thinking Outside the Boxes: Intersectionality in Action

10:30 - 12:30

Media Café, BBC New Broadcasting House

As unfashionable as it is to say it, creating an inclusive culture in your organisation relies on understanding the complexity of the underlying issues that prevent robust change. Leaders who care about diversity and inclusion therefore need new, sharper tools to make this a reality. What we do know is that the mainstream paradigm that siloes people’s identities is redundant (you know, the common refrain that says: let's focus on "gender" first, and then when that's "done" we can look into race). To be effective, we need to deploy thinking that emphasises people’s complexities over the simplicity of fictitious diversity boxes. We need an intersectional analytic framework. Only then will our solutions be effective and sustainable. This 2 hour workshop will deploy Fearless Futures' unique participative and experiential approach and will be an introduction to how leaders who care about making diversity and inclusion happen can sharpen their thinking outside of and across diversity boxes as you design and lead on making inclusion a reality.

KEYNOTE: INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP

For too long the focus of conversations around D&I have centred around company-wide initiatives rather than the role individuals play in cultivating a culture of belonging. In this session we will explore what it means to be an inclusive leader, look at the skills and behaviours required to champion inclusion and understand why inclusive leadership is the essential leadership skill for the future.

14:10 - 14:40

MAIN STAGE - BBC Radio Theatre, BBC New Broadcasting House

AFTERNOON WORKSHOP: Engaging Men in Diversity & Inclusion Initatives

14:15 - 16:30

Media Café, BBC New Broadcasting House

To build inclusive workplace cultures, we need male leaders fully engaged as champions, allies and advocates. Without their buy-in, progress in diversity and inclusion work will continue to be frustratingly slow. In this interactive session we will explore why men have been left out of the conversation and how we can enable their fuller participation. Drawing on Catalyst research, we will unpack the three Bs of engaging men in gender initiatives: Barriers, Benefits, Behaviours and discuss what concrete actions men and women can take to cultivate cross-gender partnership in the workplace and beyond. Participants will be encouraged to challenge their own assumptions about men, women and gender norms and to engage in a candid conversation about partnering on inclusion.
